Decades Of Experience

Joe Coonan qualified from the University of Limerick with an honors LLB degree in Law and French in 2001. He then went on to study a Masters degree in Criminal defense litigation and court advocacy and also achieved a diploma in Childcare and Family Law Litigation from the Law Society of Ireland. He is a qualified mediator with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and graduated from the Law Society of Ireland in 2006 as a solicitor.

His passion for advocacy and litigation was garnered with great experience with one of the busiest Dublin City Centre criminal law litigation firms John Feaheny & Company. Joe spent 10 years working in Dublin city Centre attending at all levels of courts from the District to the Special and Central Criminal Courts, representing clients and achieving excellent results.

Evolving legal path

As part of his brief as a solicitor in this area was to regularly attend at Garda stations to advise clients and take instructions from clients who had been incarcerated. The human side of criminal defense litigation appealed to Joe greatly and assisting these clients who may not have been dealt the best hand in life really appealed to him.

After 10 years practicing in the area of criminal defense Joe moved to a firm practicing in the area of Childcare and healthcare litigation. As a solicitor Joe has a Diploma in Childcare and Family law from the Law Society and he now regularly represents parents and guardian ad litems in childcare applications before all courts

These court applications involve emergency and interim care order applications for children in the District Court and Special Care applications before the High Court. This is a highly sensitive and emotive area of law and requires a particular degree of humanity and understanding when representing people and children in these cases. Joe regularly represents parents in these cases especially in special care cases before the High Court but primarily he represents guardian ad litems who represent the voice of the child in these kind of proceedings.
